公称口径40mm及以下的水表通常称为小口径水表，公称口径50mm及以上的水表称为大口径水表。这二种水表有时又称为民用水表和工业用水表，同时这种分法也可以从水表的表壳连接形式区别开来，公称40mm及以下的水表用螺纹连接，50mm及以上的水表用法兰连接。

Water meters with a nominal diameter of 40 mm or less are usually referred to as small-diameter water meters, and water meters with a nominal diameter of 50 mm or more are called large-diameter water meters.
